Heath Ledger - Oscar or not?
Today’s Golden Globe nominations announcement, the forerunner to the Academy Awards bought about the unsurprising news that Heath Ledger has been posthumously nominated for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. Ever since his untimely demise this year due to an accidental overdose speculation has been rife throughout the industry as whether his performance was enough to win him an award. The Dark Knight gave Ledger the opportunity to break away from the softer roles he has traditionally taken such as ‘A Knights Tale’ etc, and his performance in the new Batman film was, to put it bluntly, amazing. Ledger took the psychological role of and the disturbing side of Joker and made it is own, there are those that have speculated if he got too involved in the character and this could have led to his early exit, rumours that have been denied by his co-stars Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart.
You’ve got to feel for the other nominations in this category, Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr for Tropic Thunder, Ralph Fiennes for The Duchess, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt. They seem to be in a no-win situation, if they win it will be because Ledger died and the awards people didn’t want to give it to him posthumously, which will start a whole other argument. If they lose it will be because the awards people felt bad and thought it was the right thing for them to do.
Either way it’s going to be one hell of a rollercoaster ride in the run up to the Globes and then the Oscars so sit back and hang on tight. Good luck to all the nominees.
The Golden Globes are only the forerunner to the Oscars and the Academy have got to be keeping a close eye on the media reaction to the whole events at the Globes to see how they should proceed. To not even give Ledger a nomination would be wrong because on merit alone his performance would have guaranteed him a seat at the table.
